Our five mile world

Pond life!

Walking along the garden tonight to see our new 'girls' as the sun was setting in the west.

Our nine young Black Rock hens are settling in very well and will now take food from our hands. Last night at midnight, Bill and I crept along to their house to discover only 6 inside roosting so we had to capture three and manhandle the wee souls into their beds!

Safer for them indoors than to be a midnight feast for our marauding pine marten who will eat them all in one sitting.

The water lilies had closed their petals and had gone to bed, waiting for a new day to blossom again.

Bill created the pond many years ago digging out a huge area of land with just a spade and filling it with nothing but tap water and a bucket of primordial soup from a local pond.

It is now teeming with life and is such a source of pleasure as it has slowly filled up with frogs, newts, snails, great diving beetles, water boatmen, toads and damselflies to name a few.
We've had a great day!
