Detour
After a few more minutes of heading in completely the wrong direction, Adam found himself increasingly uneasy.
Eventually, he had to say something. "Er, I thought we were going to the police station?" he asked, looking across to the driver.
"Ah, change of plan sir," said the policeman. "When my colleague spoke to you earlier, that was the intention. But while she was talking to you, new orders came through on the radio, saying we've to take you to another location. Sorry to have misled you, Mr Cotter."
Adam thought it was very strange that the two officers hadn't discussed this change of plan, but decided not to mention it. He simply said "ah," and nodded his understanding. Instinctively, he felt there was no point in making the situation any more tense; for now, at least, he was simply a passenger.
They were now driving through a part of town he'd passed often, but without any real curiosity. Small industrial buildings, warehouses, lock-up garages; with nothing to interest him in the slightest, it was somewhere he had no mental map for.
So, when they eventually pulled into a space between two buildings, Adam felt entirely lost.
