Too close to the sun
The realisation hit me as I emerged through the clouds to the wide open blue sky beyond, the sun suddenly dazzling.
In my mind's eye, I saw the scene all too clearly.
A young man, walking along the top of the wall on the bridge.
A young man who'd been out celebrating his new job, a lost afternoon that left him feeling on top of the world.
A young man who'd been heading home to tell his girlfriend how good their future was looking now.
The instant I recognised the young man as myself, I felt a lurch of fear.
And then, like that cartoon coyote who realises he's run off the edge of a cliff and is standing on thin air, I fell like a stone.
Story begins here.
