Damselfly
It's an education this blipping lark. Found this damselfly in the garden and then went back to research it on-line - it's blue and there's a Common Blue Damselfly which "could be considered to be the most typical British damselfly" so that'll be what it is.
However "This species is easily confused with the various members of the genus Coenagrion" so on the The British Dragonfly Society website I started checking out the genus Coenagrion and from being a male Common Blue Damselfly I now believe it to be a female Variable Damselfly Coenagrion pulchellum even though it is "scattered and uncommon in mainland Britain".
