Ancient estates.

Out for a walk not far from home, I stopped to look at the view. The wooded area is the Ravensworth Estate. Aquired by the Saxons in 1090 it was then won in battles and passed down to families until the 1500s when one family, the Liddells took ownership for hundreds of years, and of many mines in the area, finally leaving in 1920 to live in larger grander houses. Ravensworth Castle fell into disrepair ,and now only two towers remain. The land, now mainly forest, is still looked after and private.
Thinking about it as I walked home I realised that the area in which I live is steeped in history, if only time is taken to seek it out.
