And I wish I was James Bond
I got off the train tonight, and I could hear the best noise in the world.
Kids playing as if their life depended on it. It really is lovely to hear. It was even better to watch them. Kids laughing and screaming and PLAYING is the best thing to hear and see in the whole world.
Don't worry, they didn't have me down as mad child stalker, these are 28th Ayrshire Scouts, who my boy grew up with and now my beloved is growing down with.
Boy was a Scout from 9 until last year, in saying that he is away with them tonight helping them set up for Group Camp. He was a Cub, then a Scout and then an Explorer. Visited Kandersteg twice, attended the Centenary Jamboree in Essex. Stood half naked on the top of the three highest peaks in the UK and climbed more hills than I care to even think about.
The leaders I trusted with my son's life, (if you know too much about what they get up to you really wouldn't want them to go), are one of a kind! They really are. And I don't mean that in a bad way - I can't. Because after boy moved from Scouts to Explorers, beloved signed up and became a leader.
Beloved found his niche in life. He spends nights thinking about what do do with the lads on a Friday night, and many weekends throughout the year (at least one night a month) camping. I am always astounded when I see the photographs of their camps, I'm seeing a side of my husband I didn't know existed. I'm constantly amused when we are in the town when mum's I don't know say "hello Simon", and little lads, nudge each other and shout "Hi Simon".
It's a part of his life, that I don't involve myself too much in. I don't mind it, I love the new interest it has given him. Occasionally I dip my toe in, and am constantly amused at all of their obsessions with hills, clamps and tents! Every week, he sets tasks for these kids with a passion, and looks after them as if they were his own (and yes, that means screaming at them sometimes).
As I was grateful for everything and every opportunity Boy's Scout Leaders gave him, I hope this next generation of mad wee boys and their parents are grateful to my beloved.
PS - I should have mentioned - this is only Thursday Night Cubs. Troon's 28th, has approximately 200 members - ranging from Beavers through to the Explorers, and a legion of dedicated volunteers helping out!
