We stumbled upon this amazing historical site in the heart of Sao Jose Dos Campos. This church is in the middle of a hospital compound that was authorized by the governor of Sao Paulo state in 1924. The first hospital building was opened in 1928 for the treatment of tuberculous patients from Sao Paulo. It was continually enlarged over the next 20 years, adding buildings and park-like grounds. Because of the change in tuberculous treatment around 1945 it took on other functions, but gradually feel into disrepair. The is now a movement to restore the buildings, and this church is the first one to be completed. At least I think that is what the many Portuguese explanatory signs around the property were attempting to convey.
