Sleepy Cherryblossom

Big City, Bright Lights

We are in New York City! WooooHoooooo!

We got here at 5pm after travelling from Martha's Vineyard back to Boston and then hopping straight on a bus to NY. I know that doesn't make a whole lot of sense and that we then doubled back on ourselves, but it was so much cheaper to get the Megabus from Boston than it was to travel directly from Martha's Vineyard.
Were the extra 4 hours on a smelly bus worth it? Hmmm... Of course, more money for food!

It was quite a shock to arrive in the middle of rush hour and drag our cases 16 blocks against a tide of people headed in the opposite direction! Certainly an experience after spending the last few days in sleepy Vineyard Haven. But we were so excited to finally be here we just ploughed straight through.

Our hotel is in a great spot on 48th St. Unfortunately the wifi here isn't free (most frustrating considering that this hotel is bankrupting us!) so my blipping will probably be a bit patchy as we'll have to go out with the laptop and find free spots.
Breakfast isn't included either dagnamit! So much for my plan to eat enough at breakfast to see us all the way through lunch! We do however have a microwave and a fridge in our room so porridge it is.

We unpacked all our stuff (yay! No more suitcase for 2 whole weeks!) and then headed out to gaze in wondrous awe at everything. We are really close to Times Square so we started there. So much neon! It's really quite beautiful in an incredibly bright and flashy kind of way :o) We had a good wander around taking countless pics and nosing into lots of strange shops - there is a huge store completely dedicated to M+M's, it has 3 floors!! How ridiculous is that? Then again, I bet some people really like their M+M's pj?s and giant blue M+M John Travolta from Saturday Night Fever...

Couldn't be bothered finding proper dinner tonight so we just grabbed a slice of pizza and then headed back to the hotel - suddenly completely shattered from travelling all day and overwhelmed by all the slights and sounds!

We were a bit worried before we'd got here that NY wouldn't live up to our expectations, partly because we've seen so many amazing places over the past 5 weeks and partly because we've wanted to come here for so long that I was dreading arriving to find that it was all dirty and busy and smelly and the reality of it was a real let down. It really isn't, its amazing, its bright and brash and beautiful and I can't wait to get out there and see as much as possible.

We heart New York.
