Sleep Tonight

Tough and Lovely

Under shades and sunscreen
lotion I rest. I'm soaking
up these tendrils of sun
and the towel beneath my back
is dry for now. I have
N.P.R. on my MP3 player
so I'm listening to music
and bits of news. This setup
is actually on the roof
of my porch. I climbed out
of the window in my little brother's
room to get here, where it's slanted
but secluded. I should be nude
but there's no real way of knowing
that Josiah or Carolyn will be gone
long enough for that. This is my
time to unwind, relax, breathe.
This is my porch roof where I darken
my chest and face, shoulders and neck.
This is where I meditate.
This is where I nap but not really nap
before I sleep tonight, a little warmer.
