The Traquair Amen glass

One advantage of getting married and staying at Traquair is that you get to explore the main house the next day with no tourists present.

Traquair is the oldest inhabited house in Scotland and has a fascinating history through its associations with Scottish royalty & notably the Jacobite cause via family links with the Stuarts.

The engraved glass in the centre is the Traquair Amen glass and dates from around 1740. 'Amen' glasses are so-called because they are inscribed with verses from the Jacobite version of the National Anthem, which ends in 'Amen'. They were made between 1740 and 1750.

Jacobites would toast the king at official dinners whilst passing their wine glass over water bowls to signify the Stuart king in exile, "over the water." Apparently this is why water bowls were banned at royal banquets until 1903.
