Grand Central...
Every year in Scotland, there is an event held in September called "Open Doors" which allows members of the public to get access to buildings and places not normally open to the public. This event has run for a number of years and is hugely successful.
In September 2014 the event advertised tickets for a tour of Central station, which would take in a visit to the glass roof, (certainly the largest glass roof in Europe and possibly the world) and would also take you down into the depths of the station, down into the undergound catacombs dating back to Victorian times...
There were 100 tickets on offer... they received over 83,500 applications!
As a result they decided that they would offer the same tour over a 3 month period from end of November through to early February. I booked myself onto it and was so glad I did. It was really interesting, and the 2 historians, Vic and Paul, who took us round were so well informed and passionate about the station that they really brought the amazing building to life.
We were asked not to post any of the photos from the tour on any public site so I have respected that ... this is a scene from Grand Central hotel, where we adjourned for a glass of champagne in the champagne bar afterwards...
If you get the chance to go on the tour, grab it! If taking a camera, make sure it has a strap you can wear around your neck or you will not be allowed to use it on the roof...
