Down but not out?

This man strikes a curious note in Copacabana, and excites curiosity. Always in black and with his black suitcases. He often sits near our gym, looking as if he might be waiting for a business meeting. The other day, he was studying an old telephone directory (none of which have been printed for a few years). Was he looking for contacts, or is his mind wandering?

Today I went back and asked permission to take a photo (I worry about offending people). He didn't seem bothered by the idea, so I fired away with the iPhone. When I asked if he lived in the streets, he said he had come from 'afar' and had just sat down to rest where I found him.

I wonder what is his story... what is his viewpoint?
