Shell Middens
Just as the light was fading and after a full on day, the temptation to take the small diversion down to Ferriters Cove to lookout for a bit of archaeology was irresistible!
The site was excavated between 1985 and 1993 after a local amateur archaeologist found a Neolithic knife in the area. What was found was a Mesolithic camp dated to 4500BC. the recorded excavation has been eroded away by the elements but new areas are being exposed all the time, especially after severe storms like we had last winter. The shells in my blip, formed a very distinctive layer with sand and rock above and below, I'm dead keen to go back and have a better look!
