St. Lawrences Gate

This imposing barbican structure was built in the 13th century and formed part of the walls of Drogheda. It wasn't enough however, to keep Cromwell out in 1649 when following a siege, his troops slaughtered the garrison and any clergy found within the city walls.

I have a great photo from the 1950s of my dad looking very kewl with a crewcut hairstyle and a black suit posing in front of the gate. Must have a look for it when I get home.
