New day - new beginnings

Our Tunisian bowl

In 1987 my husband and I (although not married at the time) went on a Summer vacation to Tunisia. It was a typical package trip, with Icelandic fellow travellers and an Icelandic guide. When we arrived in Tunisia we were told that our hotel (4* with air condition) had been double booked, and the guide had problems finding us another hotel on such a short notice. We went on a long bus ride and stayed over night at one hotel, before being transferred to another one the next day. That was a 3* hotel with no air condition, and there was a heat wave ... (well over 40°C during the warmest time of the day, and even up to 53°C on a trip to the mountains). Sometimes we kept cold water in the bath tub during the night, to be able to cool down when the heat was unbearable. On top of the heat almost every one of us got a stomach flue, but despite all the difficulties, we had a rather nice holiday. The fun part is that we bought some big souvenirs to take home with us, and that's something we haven't really done since. Like this big beautiful bowl, and a large vase made of wood. I was looking at this bowl just the other day, thinking about how on earth we managed to wrap it good enough so it didn't break in our suitcase on the way home!
