Statue of Hautacuperche

This bronze statue stands 4 metres tall and is the island's biggest rebel. His rebellion took place in 1488 against the Spanish occupier Hernan de Peraza. Needless to say there was a woman involved by the name of Iballa. The rebel hit the occupier in the back of his neck with a spear and killed him. The Governor of Gran Canaria ordered all men over 15 to be killed and women and children were enslaved but the rebel was still celebrated as a hero.

It's usually very pleasant when we visit this side of the island but today we had rain and very low cloud in the mountains on the journey there and back.
