Empty Nest

Pipersdad found this Yellow Jacket nest on the ground under our deck yesterday morning. It looked pretty old and dried up so I decided it was safe to handle and bring inside to photograph. We had a cold front move in this morning with a very cold wind and the temperature dropped 31 degrees in less than an hour, from 57 to 26 F (13 to -3 C). We watched our digital thermometer go down while we drank our coffee. So, no outdoor blip for me today. I don't mind the cold but the wind was frigid! I was glad I had saved the nest. I put it in a ziplock bag when I finished just in case. Don't want anything hatching in the house!!
