BISHOP EDWARD KING CHAPEL

On a cold hungover day the morning after an architecture social with everyone feeling pretty rotten and fragile we were piled onto a coach to visit the Bishop Edward King Chapel by Niall McLaughlin Architects. The Chapel is set in the Ripon Theological College and was completed in February 2013. It was intended to replace a smaller Chapel previously on campus and accommodates students of the college and some local nuns.
The wooden tree-like columns supporting the hulled roof are inspired by the interpretation of the 'nave' at the center of Seamus Heaney's poem "Lightenings viii". The quality of light was incredible with the way light was allowed to spill in from hidden wells.
