bird 7
fox sparrow
passerella iliaca
i am rather quickly coming to the end of the list of easy birds to capture from my porch. there are still some regulars, but they are either very wary or very fast moving. i'm still hopeful.
today i blip the fox sparrow. this is the largest sparrow in the US. they have a sweet melodious song. you can identify them by their rusty red plumage and their heavily streaked breast which culminates in a large red spot in the center. they are wonderful birds. it is a treat to see one.
this is definitely the most interesting bird i've blipped so far. (never judge a book by it's cover, eh?) a boreal species, they're found predominately north of us. there are a few nesting areas in maine along the canadian border. while they do not nest here where i live, they drop down from time to time in the winter to visit.
mr. fox sparrow, you are a sweetie. it is always a pleasure to have you visit. please enjoy the little warmth we have to offer you this time of year.
