Hadrians Wall, Segedunum, Wallsend

This is the remains of Hadrians Wall left in Wallsend (known to the Romans as Segedunum). There is also a reconstruction of a section of the wall as it may have looked alongside this section. Nearby is a small portion of the Wallsend Colliery which was closed in 1854 due to flooding. The main fort of Segedunum has been exhaustively excavated and just provides a ground plan of the fort best seen from the viewing tower in the museum. There is also a reconstructed bath house and a replica Roman herb garden. Wallsend later became famous for shipbuilding on the Tyne.
