Not By Eastern Windows Only
And not by eastern windows only,
When daylight comes, comes in the light;
In front the sun climbs slow, how slowly!
But westward, look, the land is bright!
Arthur Hugh Clough, Say Not The Struggle Nought Availeth
This was taken at the east end of Salisbury Cathedral, standing in front of the Prisoners of Conscience window and looking westwards. The light and spaciousness of the view feels like a good fit with the hope and optimism of the final verse of Clough's poem, in the face of a struggle that may sometimes seem futile and unavailing.
