The DLI

The Durham Light Infantry (DLI) was an infantry regiment of the British Army from 1881 to 1968. It was formed by the amalgamation of the 68th (Durham) Regiment of Foot (Light Infantry) and the 106th Regiment of Foot (Bombay Light Infantry) along with the militia and rifle volunteers of County Durham.

In 1968, The DLI was amalgamated with the Somerset and Cornwall Light Infantry, the King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, and the King's Shropshire Light Infantry to form The Light Infantry Brigade.

I photographed the Memorial to the DLI in Durham City Market Place this lunchtime, cut it out in Photoshop and overlaid it on a pic of French poppies.

The sculpture by Edinburgh artist Alan Herriot, symbolises the poignant moment after the infantry buglers sounded the ceasefire in Korea in 1953.

This conflict was the regiment's last battle honours.
