Mix and Match
Finding ourselves not at all tired of ruins (even the kids declared themselves ready for more), we spent the morning rounding up the best of the rest of the sites that yesterday's ticket also got us into: the Roman Agora, the Ancient Greek Agora and, slightly further afield, the cemetery at Kerameikos where the Sacred Way entered the ancient city walls. Later on, we made a slightly selective tour of the Archeological Museum, which seems somewhat dated and dowdy now in comparison to the new Acropolis Museum but which obviously still houses most of the real treasures of Ancient Greece (or at least those that still reside in the country), particularly the golden hoard of Troy, the curiously modernistic figures of the Cycladic tradition and the most expressive examples of Greek and Roman statuary. Later on I managed to keep my family amused by taking loads more photos of some more modern 'ruins' - a few of the more picturesque closed down shops on the way back to the Hotel having given me an idea for a screenprint to work on when I get home.
