Small Town USA

LOUISIANA TRIP DAY 2 (Back Blip)

Today we drove south from Lafayette to Franklin and then took a scenic drive back up to Lafayette stopping at a few points along the way. Franklin looked like a lovely small town. It is on Bayou Teche, and the houses were very representative of the Louisiana architecture and were made all the more striking by the moss covered trees in their front yards.

Another stop was at Jefferson Island. This was an old plantation home with beautiful gardens. It sat beside a huge lake and about 200 ft. out into the lake there was a lone chimney stack protruding above the water. Apparently it was the $2M home of the plantation owner. In 1980 Exxon was drilling in the lake and hit a salt mine creating a cavity. The entire lake drained with a sucking sound heard 30 miles away. When the Gulf of Mexico reversed to fill it again it claimed an extra 80 acres of land including the house of the owner that had only been completed 9 months before.

I took a lot of photos and had a hard time choosing my blip, but here it is. The Teche Theatre in Franklin, Louisiana.
