Holy Roof

This is one of two Grade II listed buildings within
Ince-in-Makerfield Cemetery, which is a couple of miles away from where we live.

Until last night (when I was searching for a suitable Derelict Thursday blip for today, I didn't even know they existed! ) I must have driven past them a thousand times as they were on my route to work, but slightly set back from the road so not obvious.

The Chapels were designed by Alfred Waterhouse at the beginning of his career (beginning practice in Manchester in 1854, the cemetery was opened in 1856). Apparently the stone used in the building is high quality, and even now you can picture just how beautiful these would have looked when in use.

So sad to see them in this sorry state.
