A Bend in the River

Today Mr PB joined me on the next leg of my One River journey along the River Don. It was very interesting, as some of it we knew, other bits we didn't. The start was less than a mile from our house, and the finish for today was quite close to Sheffield Centre. Despite the proximity of industry and the city, there were quite a few areas where it was surprisingly quiet and we felt miles away from the hustle and bustle. There were one or two giveaways, like the strong smell of liquorice behind the Bassett's factory.
We saw quite a few birds near the start of the walk, but it was quiet further along. Temperatures hit 17 degrees and we saw lots of harlequin ladybirds and butterflies - Comma, Red Admirals and Small Tortoiseshell.

This section of the river is near an area known as Middlewood. The flats you can see in the background were inundated during the June floods of 2007, when the surging river decided to take a shortcut, rather than go round the meander.
