Volunteering

This picture was taken on Confederate Avenue with members of Coopers Battery B, The Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, The Susquehanna Civil War Roundtable, and the 5th Kentucky Calvary. Usually twice a year, these groups all get together to work on the NPS Adopt a Position project. I have the honor to say that I belong to all of these groups and most of these people are very close friends of mine. We have two different positions, one just below the Pennsylvania Monument, and the other on Confederate Avenue. In my personal opinion, I do a lot of volunteer work through Boy Scouts and the various other groups that I go around with. However, I really love to do it. It gives me a chance to preserve history for others to see which I feel is a huge responsibility that not enough people are participating in. It also gives me a chance to meet new people that have the same interests as I do. I hope to continue to go with the “AAP” crew down to Gettysburg as much as possible for as long as I can because in our changing world, many people forget not only our Civil War veterans, but all veterans. It comforts me to be around people like me who do remember.
