The cardinal
Nerine bowdenii is generally hardy outside, but its cousin N. sarniensis rarely so, largely because it's winter-leafing. This may be OK in South Africa, but doesn't go down too well in Scotland.
This bright fella is Nerine sarniensis 'Wolsey', and lives in a cold glasshouse most of the time, except when in flower it's taken into the conservatory to be seen by visitors. Here it is with a background of Blechnum tabulare, which also comes from South Africa!
This wasn't planned and I didn't realise that I'd placed it next to a fellow-countryman until just now! I've also just realised why it might have been named 'Wolsey'!
