Fairy tale castle
Today we left Fussen to travel about 298k to Zug in Switzerland, a journey of about 3 hours - but these times were always approximate!!
We had lots of time (!) for sightseeing on the way so first stop was the two castles of Ludwig II at Schwangau about 4k from Fussen. There are 2 castles here; the original Schwangau castle, childhood home of Ludwig and Neuschwanstein castle - which is the one you see on Disney film introductions. We decided on a guided tour around Neuschwanstein which are strictly timetabled and our tour began about 12.20 which gave us time to walk up the mountain rather than take the official bus. As luck would have it, today was the worst weather-wise of the whole tour and J and I bought an umbrella from one of the many stalls willing to take money from you. The tour through the castle was interesting, if efficient, and lasted the 1 hour as advertised.
We then boarded the bus to continue to Zug. As we came to learn this part of the journey was much longer than anticipated again mainly due to the 100kph restriction on the bus. Before we realised how behind time we would be, we stopped for lunch just off the motorway at a small restaurant in what turned out to be a sort of industrial estate dedicated to carpentry and all things related to wood - again an interesting sojourn. As the day trailed on we let the satnav lead the way, even if it wasn't the route we would have taken from the road map, but we did unexpectedly arrive at a car ferry across Lake Konstanz - another adventure through beautiful countryside once the rain stopped and the sun shone.
We finally arrived in Zug about 10.30pm now staying in an Ibis hotel in the middle of town went to a "pub" next door, had a pizza and went to bed.
