Checkers Anyone?
The Harkin Store in New Ulm, MN. This general store/post office was part of a busy community called West Newton, located on the Minnesota River. It was opened in 1867 by Scottish immigrants. In 1873 the railroad to Minneapolis was built and bypassed the community and then locusts descended on southern Minnesota - and stayed for four years. West Newton and the Harkin Store declined. The store eventually closed in 1901 as river and road traffic dwindled and the post office was replaced by free rural delivery. Its doors were locked and the store and its merchandise remained untouched until the site reopened as a museum in 1938. (I cannot imagine a building sitting for over 30 years and not being vandalized; wouldn't happen now!).
The site is now managed by the Minnesota Historical Society and still has many original items on display on the shelves, just as the owners left them. This checkers game was still in the store as if waiting for someone to come and sit by the warm stove and play a game.
October word challenge today is Asymmetrical. If you look at the how the checkers pieces are arranged on the board, they are not symmetrical.
