This evening was the premiere of the Winding Snake film 'A Bird in a Cage', which was directed by Child One. The film, which was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and made in collaboration with schools in the Newport area, tells the story of Margaret Mackworth, Lady Rhondda of Llanwern - who is astonishingly little remembered today given that she was surely one of the most influential British women of the early C20th.

Of course, Current Husband and I went down to Caerleon for the premiere - but what should have been a leisurely afternoon drive turned into a real drama when we were delayed for over half an hour on the wrong side of Monmouth because some idiot unfortunate person had contrived to break down right by the bridge. On a Friday afternoon. The satnav did offer us a detour, but even with satnav the concept of a scenic tour of the Black Mountains seemed a little risky, so we sat in the jam with our teeth gritted, watching our estimated arrival time click up towards, and then inexorably past, the start time of the event. As we finally cleared Monmouth and CH's foot went to the floor, the sky put on this dramatic display - which rather reflected the way we were both feeling.

Luckily, we made it in time to see the film (need I say that we loved it?!), and were able to spend some time afterwards with the Director and her partner, who also worked on the project. I also met Professor Angela John, who is interviewed in the film, and bought a copy of her book 'Turning the Tide', which I'm very much looking forward to reading.
