Web, Untangled

I've never really understood why people talk about 'weaving a tangled web' or a 'web of deceit'. A spider's web is intricate, certainly, but also very precisely and carefully constructed - it wouldn't work if it was tangled. And you can see through it - it doesn't disguise or mask anything.
