A rare visitor to our garden this year so it was a surprise to find one sunning itself this afternoon. Perfect colours for a rich Persian rug.

This Indian Summer has produced a late crop of caterpillars and I always worry about which plants they're going to munch. A couple of days ago we encountered a four inch long, fat brown caterpillar which looked like a cross between a snake and a turd... interesting but a bit too repulsive to use as my blip. I knew it must be one of the hawk moth family but it took a while to track it down as a Death's Head Hawk Moth - altogether more photogenic, so watch this space!
