Biar from the castle

Today we explored more of Biar. The castle was open so we went up for the views which were spectacular. Here you can see the parish church of Our Lady of the Assumption in the late Gothic style of the 15th Century. The bell tower is 18th Century baroque. The building with the central dome opposite the church is the town hall.

Beyond the town you can see again how dry the ground is. I think the trees are almond trees, one of the main crops of the area.

In the afternoon we had a heavy thunderstorm with rain bouncing off the streets. We noticed that there were no gutters or drains in the streets so the rain simply ran downhill. Not surprising that flash floods are a problem. Happily most of us were in the hotel at the time - otherwise we would have been soaked in minutes. Later in the day we visited a local bakery which makes turrón- a form of nougat, made with sugar, almonds and egg white.
