Conkers!
Conkers dropping all around us as we walked along the river bank at Naburn Locks this morning!
Such a beautiful day, yet again.
The water sparkled and a heron flew up in front of us, and followed us a few feet away as we walked along.
We sat on the bank to have our picnic lunch. So peaceful, except for the birds singing, and the sound of the water tumbling over the weir.
Horse Chestnut trees are not native to this country.
They were introduced to Britain from the Balkans in the late 16th century, but it wasn't until 200 years later that the fruits were used to play "conkers". Before that "conkers" was played with hazel or cobnuts, or snail shells.
I think in America they are called "Buckeyes".
Came back with a bag full, which we have now put in a large bowl.
Can't resist picking them up. One of the joys of Autumn!
Just a pity that beautiful shiny colour doesn't last.
