Helping Hand

In preparation for commemorating the start of the First World War and indeed Armistice Day our local historian and friend Jim is putting an exhibition together focussing on local heroes that fell in both wars. In addition to the war memorial there are two plaques currently standing loose in the church, one beaten copper with names from the first war, and the other in black marble duplicating the names on the memorial. Photos were wanted so part of this morning was taken up at the church with Mrs W’s cast-off, and my telephone.

Parallax is the biggest problem especially when hand held, so a few thousand shots later we were putting the plaques back in their corner when we noticed the ‘Rippingale British Legion’ standard – sadly neglected and full of dust – it’s been some years since we had a branch. This we just had to have a photograph of for the exhibition, and we needed a helping hand to show it at its best. Not sure who came back to help but . . .

(When I came to print the images I remembered the state the plaques were in – they looked as if they had been left out while the place was decorated. To cut a long story long – a long time has been spent in PS cleaning them up.

Here we have the Copper Plaque and here the Marble Plaque.)
