Inishbofin
Visiting the islands off the coast of Ireland is a real enthusiasm for me these days, so here we are on Inishbofin off the coast of Connemara. The crossing from Cleggan was quite a choppy one but fortunately it's just eight miles! It was raining on arrival but had cleared by early afternoon and we set off to explore the western side of the island, this included high cliffs, a sandy beach great for a paddle but with dangerous currents and views out to the deserted cottages on the island of Inishark, the last residents left in the 1960's.
This island has vast areas of commonage and no walls or fences, so on can ramble where ever one wishes, which we did from the highest hill to the rugged wave swept coast. There are very few dwellings on the north and west sides of the island so I decided to blip a couple of them and some sheep, of which there are many on island.
There are only 140 people living on the island and tourism must be a big part of the islanders income, although it's quiet now.
