Tuesday was a gorgeous and warm day on the Oregon Coast as we continued on our beach trip. We traveled south 40 miles to Newport. We went to the Yaquina Bay lighthouse and from that area, the view of the iconic Yaquina Bay Bridge is just wonderful. This bridge was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005. The whole darn trip can be seen here. And by the way, in Depoe Bay we saw the distant spouts of Grey Whales. Several whale watching boats were out there, and then we'd see a burst of water, which was fun to see. There is a picture of it, but it was quite a ways out...so it's not all that great.

The bridge uses Art Deco and Art Moderne design motifs as well as forms borrowed from Gothic architecture. The Gothic influence is seen in the balustrade, which features small pointed arches, and in the arches of the side span piers. The ends of the bridge are augmented by pedestrian plazas that afford a view of the bridge and provide access to the parks at the landings by stairways. Pedestals were provided for proposed sculptures of seals, but the statues were never executed.
