Metcalf Wildlife Refuge
Going through the Metcalf Wildlife Refuge; looking for that eloosive moosive. None seen today, but I enjoyed the birds and other creatures that fill the area. The Refuge's 2,800 acres are all along the Bitterroot River so that no homes or other edifices can encroach on the extensive breeding and nesting areas of the wildlife. The Refuge was established in 1964 for the huge numbers of migratory birds that come through the Bitterroot Valley at all time of the year due to our mild seasons. Last year, thousands of Tundra Swans decided to stay for longer than usual and we really enjoyed their visit. I hope they come again to stay for the winter.
There is an old 9-hole golf course on the edge of the Refuge and large numbers of geese love the grass there. Occasionally your ball will be pounced upon by a goose who thinks it's an egg. They'll lay on it for hours...do not disturb. Just drop another ball nearby...no penalty.
