Nimes

After departing Severac-le-Chateau we worked our way through the spectacular gorges of the Tarne and the Dorbie and up into the Causse, following somewhat accidentally the route the cyclists from Wellington took last Summer when I was supporting in a minibus. It was still quite steep.
We then ended up in one of my favourite places in the South of France, the Cirque de Navacelles, where the river has carved out a deep canyon meandering through the garrigues.
A swim there in the deep pools under the cascade was very welcome as it was getting increasingly hot as the day wore on, a process that continued as we left and got nearer to Nimes.
Luckily our accommodation there - an AirBrB find - had a shaded and cool garden and we were met with cold water and juice. Talk with the owner and her husband provided an itinerary and a few recommendations for eating. Nimes proved to be an attractive city. The combination of open boulevards, buildings ancient and modern and the use of running water made for an enjoyable stroll. We couldn't resist the Indian that our host had recommended and enjoyed the French take on that traditional English meal, a curry. The owner has worked for the French Embassy in India hence why she ended up n France rather than following the more traditional route to the UK.
Strolling back to the house the lighting in the centre was spectacular. The colours changed repeatedly on the water leading to the station and the Roman Arena in the image above stood out from the night. The Arena is still used for events and as you might guess from the statue, one of those events is bull-fighting, the season for which is in October. I think I'd prefer the Jazz or Opera options of the Summer.
