Diary of an Edinburgher

Alcohol intake soars

No little bark to waken the household this morning - Archie must have known it’s Sunday.

If I suddenly increased my coffee intake yesterday, then today I suddenly increased my alcohol intake. We walked over the Links to Montpellier for an afternoon drink and nibbles. In the Links there were six big dogs, all playing together, with owners - one chap was throwing the balls really far for each of them. Archie ran off to them, excited. Then stopped and decided not to go near them. He’s learned that big dogs chasing balls are just not much fun.

We had a sharing platter and a beer while Archie lay under the table, watching feet go by. He complained not one bit. It was I who did the complaining. I spilled my schooner of untouched beer. The waitress came to mop it up, and I asked if she would top it up for me.
‘We’ll only charge you for a half pint.’
‘I had hoped it would be complimentary - good PR and all that.’
‘Oh we can’t go giving stuff away…’

Well, you’d’ve thought I’d asked for a complimentary bottle of champagne. They spill more than that at the taps! Eventually the manageress came over with a free top up. It was only then that we placed our food order. I wasn’t impressed.

We then walked down to the Black Bird, another dog friendly pub. Actually, good soundtrack on - nothing screechy. Archie, who had spent quite a bit of the afternoon lying waiting patiently for us had three good run arounds. At one point he ran up to two chaps who had their shoes and socks off. ‘Watch out for your socks!’ we yelled. They seemed to think he wouldn’t touch smelly socks. Wrong!

We played our game of ‘Come’ until he was tired out and flopped down on the grass. Archie is very good at stopping and waiting at the kerb before being told to cross. Sometimes.

Not sure if it’s the beer or the big walk that has made me rather sleepy...
