Pevensey Levels

Pevensey Levels is an area of wet lands between Bexhill and Eastbourne.
The history of this lowland marsh area is dominated by the changing relationship between the land and the sea.
The Romans built a walled navel base on the edge of what was then a lagoon, and the Normans landed here in 1066 .
Reclamation of land began in the middle ages and was achieved by progressively draining portions of the marsh .
The area is now part of the national nature reserve managed by the Sussex wildlife trust and has a wide range of wildfowl and wetland plants.
