The beach at Torrey Pines State Park

I'm sitting here in the gloaming, watching the superb evening sky fade away over the ocean after another awesome sunset at the end of one more amazing day. Reds, oranges and yellows suffuse the horizon while above this the blues fade to indigo and black. Impossible to capture though. I'll just have to see it in my mind's eye.

Watched the moon set tonight. Only 3 days old, so a thin sliver of a thing. It was a lovely red colour as it slipped below the horizon to join the sun. Few people saw it go, certainly not the numbers who watched the sun depart a couple of hours earlier.

This afternoon we went to Torrey Pines State Park, one of my favourite places around San Diego. This is the third time we've been here, but the first during the summer. We think we prefer the park in April when there is more green, more flowers and more animal activity, but the overpowering heat of the afternoon was something to experience.

One of the attractions of the park is the ecology, which is so different from anything we have in the UK, the Torrey Pines themselves, the cacti and the chaparral vegetation. The other is the rocks and their magnificent formations both on the top of the mesa and here as cliffs along the ocean shore.

In the morning we were expecting to go kayaking again but high surf stopped any of that. So we made do with gambolling around in the shallows on a boogie board and a bit of snorkelling. Only saw a sandy bottom although others said they'd seen seals and a leopard shark. Had a go on a paddleboard but was unable to stand up!
