Construction of the Western Gateway infrastructure scheme (OK - a new road) continues apace. It is necessary to allow the development of Port Salford, which will lie adjacent to the new-ish AJB stadium, home of Salford Reds. It will also involve a new bridge over the ship canal on the other side of the Barton high level bridge, works around the Trafford Centre (nearly there), and a new rail line from the Liverpool- Manchester line entering from the north. Those bridges on the ship canal are going to have to open more regularly as more shipping returns to the canal - but that is what it was built for in the 1890's !
