More Family History

On this date 122 years ago, my great-grandfather was killed in a mining disaster, shortly before his only child, my paternal grandfather, was born. My sister, welshmaid50 went to the memorial ceremony today, as she does every year. You can see her blip here.

We have other family connections to that tragic event. Another great-grandfather, on the maternal side, was decorated for his bravery in the rescue work. One of his relations survived the explosion, while two others -- father and son -- were killed.

I blipped the other side of this centennial mug a couple of years ago, with an ironic story about my widowed great-grandmother.
