Day 3 ... Pompeys Pillar
Today we drove to Pompeys Pillar. It was so good apart from the Mosquitos that attacked me as soon as I got out of the car. By the time I walked to the tourist centre I had eleven bites on my legs....the tourist centre was only 50mts away. So what with bites all over my kegs and bruises from the weekend...it's nit a pretty sight! In the tourist centre they gave you spry which did the trick...no bites after that.
We watched a film of Clark and Lewis. They were two explores who were commissioned by the government to follow the Yellowstone River to see where it lead. They knew they would come across unfriendly Indians so took an interpreter and his wife Sacagawea who was Indian (she was taken from her family aged 11 by the translator and was pregnant by him aged 15). They had a little boy who Clark nicknamed Pompey....and Clark later adopted him. The rock is named after him.
Clark wrote many, many journals on his journey which lasted two years. He also carved his name on Pompeys Pillar. We saw the carved name which is protected under glass. The journals were nearly lost when they were hit by a storm when canoeing down the Yellowstone River...Sacagawea saved them.
We climbed to the top of Pompeys Pillar and the views were stunning. When Lewis and Clark were here all they could see were vast amounts of animals...today we couldn't see any.
We also tried on traditional Indian clothing which was fun. I really liked the dress I wore.
We came back to the hotel and had enough time for a laze by the pool before we went over to Toms house for a team dinner to celebrate six birthdays.
