Castle under the heavens

Lowther Castle, south of Penrith, was a complete contrast to anything else on the itinerary. The huge ruined castle is slowly being restored, and though the extensive gardens are not being put back as they were - apart from the Japanese Garden which is being sponsored by a Japanese society - there are a number of surviving features which can still be seen. Abandoned in 1937, restoration began in 2007 and I thought it might be interesting for the group to see something completely different. Fortunately they enjoyed the experience!

Earlier in the day I took them down the Honister Slate Mine (I always add a few non-horticultural experiences!) and then to Dalmain House, north of Pooley Bridge.
