Wool against Weapons' words on the wire at Alderma
Full Story and high-speed video here
We did it! Seven miles of knitted scarves were unfurled and held up by activists and knitters, linking Aldermaston Weapons Establishment with Burghfield, where the nuclear bombs are made. 24,000 hours of knitting went into the knitting of the scarf.
I am not a knitter, but I did help by wearing pink clothing, stitching together the scarf sections along the road, observing the two-minute silence, and of course whooping and hollering to order!
The weather was glorious; the police were omnipresent but not unpleasant. Two coaches had come from Stroud, and our driver, who likes "the interesting jobs" had read up on the campaign the night before, and stood around all day, filming the events on his phone for his other half! CleanSteve was also filming with his video camera for Stroud Community Tv, so I hardly saw him all day, but I did meet some great people from Stroud, Portsmouth, Bristol, Hants, and the Netherlands. As there were seven miles of scarf we did not get to meet all the groups, but, as was said at the rally,
"Greenham Women are Everywhere!" (big cheer)
"and so are their daughters!" (even bigger cheer).
I'm glad to have been part of the history that was made today.
A new film of the event can be seen here, with some footage by CleanSteve
