The Ribchester Helmet

Found (buried)in Ribchester by a clog makers son in 1796. The helmet was for use in cavalry sports - hippika gymnasia. These were both training sessions and entertainment, using the most elite riders of the regiment dressed in elaborate outfits, including this full face mask and helmet.
It has been on display at the British Museum since 1814 but to mark Ribchester Museum's Centenary it's back home on loan until October.

Edit: Ribchester is in Lancashire "It is written upon a wall in Rome; Ribchester was as rich as any town in Christendom".
The helmet/mask was beautiful and moving in a moment across the centuries way
