Voyage of a Beagle & Lab

Nelson Monument, Calton Hill, Edinburgh

Lunch in Edinburgh with Ky and my sister today, fantastic lunch and lots of fun but Edinburgh was horribly wet and miserable with the castle and most land marks disappearing behind a cloud of smirry rain.
I remember my mum telling me that a ball dropped from the top of this tower at one o'clock, to coincide with the one o'clock gun, this was to give ships in the Forth a visual and audible time check. I'm not sure why but I could never quite get my head round the dropping ball and didn't entirely believe her, today I quickly googled Nelson Monument, just to confirm the name and low and behold she was right, sorry for doubting you mum! The tower was restored to full working order in 2009 so the next time I'm in Edinburgh I'll be making a point of having Calton Hill in view at one o'clock to view the falling ball, hopefully it'll be a clearer day than today.
